The verdict’s out on capes…

Announced in Vogue amongst many others this August, capes were set to take off from catwalks to the regular foot path. Hitting the fashion shows first for winter 2009 and then returning for another season in 2010 many have since debated how great the cape is. And no, before you start thinking lycra and red pants and hoping you may be able to fly, or planning to fend off a raging bull, I mean to draw your attention to the more practical kind…

Now let us not forget, ladies, that us 21st century girls aren’t the first to wear these beautiful shoulder-skirts, I mean it won’t be long before “a white Christmas” graces our screens again (which reminds me, I must set it to record this year!) and boy doesn’t a dreamy, sheepskin version set aside all critics. And yes, Celtic Sheepskin does have a sheepskin cape to be proud of too. I’ve said it before, and I want to point out again that you can have us make it in white if you prefer, but for our “off the peg” version we’ve got the gorgeous mocca snow tip Toscana cape gracing our winter catalogue’s front cover.

OK, so the image above isn’t straight off the cover, but sometimes it’s fun to play with these things!

When considering this topic as a blog post, I looked around to see what debates were out there on “the cape”, and I found Fashion Writer and Deputy Fashion Editor at The Independent almost at loggerheads on the topic. Writer, Rhiannon wrote in favour and Carola wrote against – although by Carola’s own admission, they have a “certain dramatic, and sometimes sweetly eccentric charm” cancelled out only because they are on trend. Hmmm, yes but so were sheepskin boots and we all know that we all bought them because they’re comfortable and warm, not just because a beautiful skinny bean on the catwalk had them put on her feet. So what other lovely capes can I suggest to you from Celtic Sheepskin I hear you ask. Two more to be precise! Both of which have tiny arms, which you may think is cheating a little, but we wanted to make sure you wore them and not only looked great and stayed warm, but that they remained functional. After all, what is clothing if it’s not at least functional, right!

So I’ll leave you with the my final thought that whether you follow fashion religiously, want to pretend you’re starring with Bing Crosby or are simply bored of your old rainproof mac, then I think you should seriously consider trying on one of these beauties. There aren’t that many coats around that can transform you to the same standards of Cinderella’s fairy godmother!
